Working in Greece... Rhodes not just a vacation!

Will I need to read and write Greek?
Although not essential, it is advisable to learn first to speak and understand the
Greek language. Most local Greek people speak good English. If you are working
in a tourist resort for only the summer months then it is usually advantageous to
speak English, but if you wish to find work in winter time, when there are fewer
jobs available you will find speaking Greek an advantage.
What kind a wages can I expect to receive?
Wages vary, you can expect between 750 to 1800 euros per month depending on
your job and required qualifications.

What is IKA?

IKA is just like National Insurance as we know it in the UK. If you are a seasonal
worker (working only from the beginning of May to the end October) you are
entitled to additional payments from the Government in the winter months. This
can only be given if your employer pays their contribution on a monthly basis to
the IKA office, you are awarded stamps. You should receive one stamp for each
day you work. Most employees receive 25 stamps for each full month worked.
You must work two full seasons before you can expect to receive a payment in
winter. You will also receive a bonus payment at Christmas and Easter.
Your employer’s accountant will run through all the necessary steps in the
beginning of the season and also will advise how to claim you winter payments at
the end of your second full working season.
Greek workers Insurance Book
At the end of your first season and provided that your employer has paid all the
relevant previous months stamp contributions you will be able to apply for your
Health book from the local IKA office this will in turn entitle you to reduced cost
hospital visits, GP consultations for free and 75% reduction on all prescription
charges.

What papers do I need?
First you need to obtain a Greek Tax number to allow you to work in Greece.
Your Greek Tax number is pronounced Ah-Fi-Me, you will need to take with you
your passport and your Tax number will be issued immediately to you.
Second is to open a Greek bank account, most banks do not require a minimum
opening balance, but in order to apply for a Residency Permit you must ensure
your account has a minimum of 330 euros in it.
